flanking and following
on the left a step too close to the curb
and set out to match the morning pace
people-watching in the slow-moving crowd
behind as always
think lenses and plastic frames
shatterproof to protect the wonder
darkly tinted to obscure the selection
of the weaker ones with their stories exposed
their scars out and their shirts mismatched
speaking and speaking to themselves
and of themselves
lost in the noise
of the crowd
in the morning
as they move
